SCA04H: Two Archers Firing From Behind Siege Shield The East of India Company The Army of Toyotomi Hideyoshi Set: SCA04H Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598) was the second of the three great unifiers of Japan. Born the son of a poor foot soldier, Hideyoshi made a living as a peddler. He gradually seized opportunities as they came and rose through the ranks to serve under the warlord Oda Nobunaga, who had nearly succeeded in unifying the nation after toppling the Muromachi government in Kyoto. Hideyoshi is known for the two reckless attempts to invade Korea during his rule and for his unfortunate nickname of "monkey" due to his sunken features and dark skin. The magnificent army of Toyotomi Hideyoshi were ferocious fighters and ruthless veterans of the Korean campaigns. The Ashigaru or lower class Samurai made up the bulk of all Japanese armies. These troops were the workhorse of the army and were divided into corps of arquebusiers (gunners), archers, spearmen and subsidiary corps (flag bearers, supply etc.). This set depicts two ashigaru archers wearing the okegawa-do style of basic armor with jingasa conical helmet. The ashigaru were the foot soldiers of old Japan. Although recruited first to swell an army's numbers and paid only by loot, the samurai began to realise their worth, particularly with arquebuses and spears, until well-trained ashigaru made up a vital part of any samurai army. This set features two Toyotomi ashigaru bearing the mon (crest) of their clan in gold on both helmet and breastplate. They are identified by bright red armor with blue fittings. One archer fires while the second reloads behind the protection of the large siege shield. Both soldiers are hand painted with intricate detailing. Let the arrows fly!
